"Pink Fairy Lights"

The following poem was written way back in 2014 for a creative writing class I attended in High School. While I was extremely reluctant to post anything I'd written many, many moons ago (as it's always slightly cringe inducing to revisit), I have decided, after much convincing, to post the following poem, if not for me, for my nana, who rather likes this one, so much so she put it in a cross stitch.
Pink Fairy Lights
A single string of Pink Fairy Lights
Can provoke so many emotions in a child
At first she praised the little rose fires,
as they rested,
Tangled around the top of her bed
like a crown upon a royal head.
This was when they made her feel grown up
Important.
Bulbs glowing like tiny faeries
Trapped in a pink pebble prison.
Gradually they lost their light.
Thus followed the teenage years.
The dark ages.
Poor pebbles that once brought joy,
symbolized childishness.
The Lights that once shone so vivid and lucent
were now sullenly strung out along the wall,
suppressing their radiance.
Perhaps one day
Reluctant fingers will find their way back
To the unused plug in the wall
And those Pink Fairy Lights will be
Once more
Important.
